Welcome

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the International Allelopathy Society at the Fourth World Congress on Allelopathy here at Wagga Wagga.

The local Organizing Committee has put together an exciting academic and social program under the leadership of Professor Jim Pratley. This time our congress theme is appropriately chosen as “Establishing the Scientific Base”. Credibility of a discipline is rooted in the collective ability of its members as researchers contributing to the discovery of new knowledge in the discipline that can clarify fundamental scientific principles and mechanisms which in turn can be used in solving practical problems. Allelopathy is no exception. Because of the complex interacting nature of allelopathy we are often faced with the challenge of establishing the scientific basis of its existence. New and exciting developments in biomolecular techniques in recent years have been helpful in alleviating some of these problems.

This congress will provide an excellent opportunity to exchange new ideas in developing creative methods to overcome methodological challenges in elucidating the operating mechanisms of allelopathy.

With a better understanding of the mechanisms we shall find new ways to solve practical problems of agriculture, horticulture and the like. To be successful we need to work together as a team combining may specializations. Through open discussions not only can we develop such partnerships in research but also develop and nurture friendship.

Personally, I am looking forward to such discussions with you all over the course of this meeting and I invite you to do the same. Let us have a most successful meeting of academic minds full of vigorous discussions in amongst the wonderful NSW hospitality.

Prof. Azim Mallik
President, International Allelopathy Society.
