Professor Marie Bashir

Her Excellency, Professor Marie R. Bashir A.O. FRANZP, was appointed Governor of News South Wales on 1 March 2001. Her Excellency was granted fellowship the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1980. Until her appointment as Governor, she was Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney. In 1971 she was awarded the Mother of the Year. In 1988 she became an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her services to child and adolescent health, especially mental health.

Professor Bashir has as her research interests child and adolescent mental health and issues effecting refugees, immigrant and aboriginal children. She has established outreach groups to assist young refugees to cope with re- settlement in Australia and has been active in the area of human rights and better health of Australian aboriginal people.

Her Excellency is the Vice- Regal Patron of the XXVth International Congress of the Medical Women International Association. She is a member of the Medical Women’s Society of New South Wales.
