Allan Savory workshop in Orange, NSW

HDMA

4 June 2003

Australian farmers have a unique opportunity to hear Allan Savory, the acclaimed Zimbabwean wildlife biologist who pioneered holistic management, speak at a workshop in Orange, NSW.

Allan, who is in Australia to accept a major international environmental award, will speak at a public workshop at the Orange Ex-Services Club on 4 June 2003.

Bruce Ward, founder of the Holistic Decision Makers’ Association of Australia and New Zealand, said the workshop will challenge and change people’s understanding of
decision-making in industry, agriculture and government.

“Allan Savory has given thousands of land managers in Australia and around the world the tools to make decisions that are financially, ecologically and socially sound.”

“He has revolutionised the way we think about agriculture and our natural systems.”

“Holistic management is a way of putting people back in control of their destinies by taking a new approach to decision-making – one that recognises the relationships between the physical, financial and social structures on land.”

Allan has spent the best part of his life experimenting and understanding holistic management in the rangelands of Africa and the USA. His early careers were as a rancher, soldier, wildlife ranger and politician in then British owned Rhodesia. In 1979 he was exiled from his country by nationalist Ian Smith, after crossing the floor in 1972 to set up an opposition party to the all-white Government.

Moving to the USA Allan set up the non-profit Savory Centre for Holistic Management in 1984, consulting to governments around the world and the United Nations. He continues to work in Zimbabwe, sharing his work in holistic management with traditional owners on land near Victoria Falls.

The theme of the Orange workshop is “Meeting the Challenges of Planning a Profit” – a response to both the short term issues caused by the drought and the long term issues of making farms sustainable in the face of increasing overseas competition, rising input costs and a resurgent Australian dollar.

Allan and his wife, Jody Butterfield, who collaborated on the latest and revised edition of Holistic Management,® will speak about how holistic management is being adopted worldwide and facilitate some of the workshop sessions.

“Allan and Jody will present a unique and powerful message to all of us who constantly strive to balance our personal, financial and stewardship responsibilities in an ever changing and challenging environment," Mr Ward said.

The cost of the day long workshop is $120 per person, $75 for an additional family member and $25 for students.

Places are limited and people are asked to book with Lennie Chaplain of the HDMA by phone (02 6752 9065), fax (02 6752 9064) or email cvchaplain@bigpond.com.
